Embracing Brachytherapy for Breast Cancer Treatment
Paula Cristina Batista da Rocha, a 51-year-old factory worker from Porto, in Portugal, shares her courageous journey of brachytherapy for breast cancer treatment. Her story highlights the emotional and physical challenges she faced and the transformative role of brachytherapy in her treatment.
Initial Diagnosis and Emotional Struggles
Paula’s journey began when she was called for a routine screening. The doctors noticed something unusual and referred her to the Breast Cancer Institute. After undergoing several tests, Paula received the devastating news that she had a malignant tumor. The diagnosis was a severe blow, leaving her feeling psychologically distressed. “Why, my God? Why me? After suffering so much in life, why this?” she recalls thinking.
Choosing Brachytherapy
Following her diagnosis, Paula underwent surgery to remove part of her breast. The operation went well, but she was then faced with a choice of further treatments: radiotherapy or brachytherapy. Paula decided to learn more about both options. After discussing with her doctor, she chose brachytherapy. “Doctor, now we’re going to brachytherapy,” she decided, feeling informed and confident in her choice.
The Brachytherapy Experience
Paula’s brachytherapy treatment involved the insertion of 12 plastic tubes into her breast. These tubes allowed for precise delivery of radiation directly to the tumor site. The treatment was conducted over five days at the IPO – Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto Francisco Gentil, in Portugal, with sessions in the morning and afternoon, each lasting no more than ten minutes. Despite the initial fear and uncertainty, Paula found the experience manageable and was well cared for by the medical staff. “I loved the staff, I loved the doctors. I pretended I was at home,” she says.
Recovery and Support
Paula’s recovery went smoothly, and she reacted well to the treatment. She felt supported by the medical team and found strength in her faith. “I ask God for me to be a happy woman, to be lucky in life and may God help me in this battle,” she shares. Paula also took it upon herself to counsel other patients, explaining the benefits of brachytherapy and encouraging them to have faith and strength.
A Message of Hope
Paula’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of a positive mindset. She emphasizes the need for strength and faith in overcoming illness. “If we don’t have strength and faith, nothing will happen. Because that’s also good medicine to help with our illness,” she advises. Paula encourages others to stay active, make friends, and maintain a hopeful outlook. “I wish you all lots of luck, lots of health. That’s what I ask of God,” she concludes.
